The items data is a dump from the Archives' database - originally XML, trimmed down somewhat and converted to JSON. The document images are pulled live from the Archives servers. You can access all the same data via the NAA's Recordsearch interface.
I'm Mitchell Whitelaw, an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Arts and Design at the University of Canberra. This blog began in 2009 as documentation of a research project on the visualisation of archival datasets, supported by the National Archives of Australia under the Ian Maclean Award. Now it documents my ongoing research into the exploratory display and visualisation of large cultural collections.
These are Java executables, made with Processing. NB the A1 Explorer requires a network connection to load document images, and may not work behind a firewall or proxy.

What's your input data source -- is it pulling from EAD-encoded finding aids or from a database or...?
